Climate crusaders from Just Stop Oil rushed onto the stage on the opening night of the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall tonight, sparking condemnation from those in the audience. Two eco-loons, dressed in white ‘Just Stop Oil’ t-shirts and wielding orange branded flags, dashed onto the iconic stage before being tackled by security and dragged away. In a tweet celebrating the invasion, which drew the ire of those in attendance, the nuisance environmentalists said: “We Cannot Afford to Fiddle While Rome Burns – Just Stop Oil Disrupt the Proms.” “Two Just Stop Oil supporters have ran onto the stage at the @RoyalAlbertHall on the opening night of the @bbcproms .” The barbaric act was met with deafening boos. They attempted to address the audience before being forcibly removed.” Taking aim at the BBC , the fanatics blamed the broadcaster for not giving sufficient air time to the issue of climate change. The group said: “Tonight’s action comes in response to the BBC ‘s underwhelming coverage of the climate emergency. In recent weeks, the BBC has been accused of ‘false balance’ as well as uncritically regurgitating government and oil company propaganda.” A BBC Spokesperson said: ‘There was no disruption to the concert or the broadcast during the few seconds the protesters were on stage.’ Commenting on the video, one Twitter user, referencing the audible boos that met the protesters said: “You got the reception you deserved.” Another added: “Just plain nasty. Trying to ruin all our traditions isn’t the way to gain popularity, you have literally become the most hated movement in the UK”. Most recently the sustainability warriors burst onto Court 18 at Wimbledon on two separate occasions, bringing both men’s and women’s matches to a halt. Deborah Wilde, 68, Simon Milner-Edwards, 66, and William Ward, 66, were all charged with aggravated trespassing for their unruly entry onto the playing surface at SW19. Prior to that three activists dashed onto the hallowed turf at Lords, to disrupt Day One of the second Ashes Test. England wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow made light work of hauling one of the protesters off the outfield, to rapturous applause from the stands. The Gallagher Premiership Rugby Final was also brought to a stop after Just Stop Oil ran onto the Twickenham pitch, armed with orange powder. And it’s not just sport that has got the Just Stop Oil treatment. Even the Chelsea Flower Show didn’t escape the green activists, who once again threw orange powder all over one of the installations, to mixed responses from the onlookers.
