Jockey will carry best friend’s ashes for big race

Ryan Potter will pay a fitting tribute to pal Con Rutledge in the world’s oldest flat event, the Town Plate at Newmarket

When Con Rutledge was killed in a car crash his close friend Ryan Potter made a promise that he would one day pay him a fitting tribute.

Two years on, the racehorse trainer is doing just that, riding with his friend’s ashes under his silks in the world’s oldest flat race, the Town Plate at Newmarket on Saturday.

Mr Rutledge had been due to take part in the same race two years ago, but died in a car crash just 48 hours before.

Mr Potter, 35, said: “It will be amazing to carry Con’s ashes around in the race as I know how much he wanted to do it as he had been looking forward to the race all summer before the accident.”
