Jeremy Hunt makes subtle dig at Liz Truss as UK braced for recession

(Image: GETTY)Jeremy Hunt made a subtle dig at Liz Truss in his response to the announcement that the UK is entering a recession. In what appeared to be a nod to the alternate policies pursued by Rishi Sunak’s predecessor, Mr Hunt said: “There is no other way”. He warned that the UK is facing a “tough road ahead”, adding that “extremely difficult decisions” will be needed to “restore confidence and economic stability”. This comes after Ms Truss’ catastrophic mini budget caused chaos in the markets. Mr Hunt was responding to the news that the UK economy shrunk by 0.2 percent in the last quarter. The Chancellor said: “I am under no illusion that there is a tough road ahead – one which will require extremely difficult decisions to restore confidence and economic stability. But to achieve long-term, sustainable growth, we need to grip inflation, balance the books and get debt falling. There is no other way.”
