Chancellor says Government is ‘laying the strong foundations’ needed to grow economy after Office for National Statistics published new data

Jeremy Hunt has hailed stronger than expected economic growth figures as he said the Government was “laying the strong foundations needed to grow the economy”.

The UK economy grew by 0.2 per cent between April and June this year, according to new data published on Friday morning by the Office for National Statistics.

That number was boosted by growth of 0.5 per cent in June, following a fall of 0.1 per cent in May and growth of 0.2 per cent in April.

Economists had expected GDP to grow by 0.2 per cent in June and to flatline in the quarter as a whole after it grew by 0.1 per cent in the first quarter of the year.
