‘Jealous’ ex ‘set woman on fire then left chilling voicemail for her boyfriend’

Georgian Constantin is alleged to have murdered Valentina Cozma at her home in Stoke because he was unhappy she began another relationship weeks after they broke up

A ‘jealous’ and ‘bitter’ man stands accused of murdering his ex-partner by dousing her in petrol before setting her on fire.

The jury at Stafford Crown Court heard how Georgian Constantin is alleged to have killed Valentina Cozma at her home earlier this year. The prosecution says Constantin, 42, plotted to kill Valentina, 40, simply because he was unhappy she had started a new relationship just weeks after they had separated – he then allegedly carried out his plan. The Romanian national is alleged to have bought petrol two days before the killing and stored it close to Valentina’s home in Campbell Road, Stoke. He arranged to meet her there after she finished work on February 9 to give her some money for their son’s upkeep.

But instead the trial heard how he doused her in petrol and set her alight, with the victim’s body being discovered by firefighters who tackled the blaze. A post-mortem examination established she died having inhaled products of combustion. The court heard Constantin then used her phone to send a voicemail to her new lover in which he said: “Garbage. I get rid of her. I know where you live. I come to your work. I know you work at TK Maxx. Be patient,” reports StokeonTrentLive.

The defendant, of Hartshill Road, Stoke, denies both murder and making threats to kill. Opening the case for the prosecution, Philip Bradley KC said: “The case concerns the killing of Valentina Cozma who was 40 years old at the time of her death. For many years she had been in a relationship with this defendant and they have a 16-year-old son. They ultimately separated in January when he moved out of the family home in Campbell Road, Stoke. Shortly afterwards Valentina began a relationship with a man. The defendant knew about this and was very bitter.
