Jane Cassidy: ‘I started a new chapter in life with a thrilling career change’

Jane Cassidy is no stranger to interviews. Originally from Kilkeel, Co Down, but now living in Belfast, she has had many careers: singer-songwriter, broadcaster, playwright and teacher. Now she can add author to the list. Her debut novel, The Desire Line, is about a disgruntled television producer and journalist, Jer McCabe, whose life turns upside down when he collects his wife, Nora, from a psychiatric ward where she has befriended a wild artist called Helena. While Cassidy is well versed in being asked about herself, the world of fiction is new territory.

In the Seventies Cassidy was a prominent voice in the Irish folk music revival. When she was 20 years old she lived in Brittany, France, where she supported the blues singer Joe
