Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will face criticism over Saudi transfer

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been offered a money-spinning move to the Saudi Pro League with Al Ettifaq, who are managed by his former team mate Steven Gerrard

Jamie Carragher has suggested Jordan Henderson’s vocal support for LGBT+ issues could open the Liverpool captain up to criticism if he moves to Saudi Arabia.

Henderson, 32, has two years remaining on his contract at Anfield. However, talks have begun over a potential move to Al Ettifaq, where former Reds favourite Steven Gerrard took over as manager earlier this summer.

Being homosexual or transgender in Saudi Arabia remains illegal, and anyone who identifies as LGBT+ can be subjected to severe penalties. There has also been questioning over the country’s suitability to host the 2030 World Cup. Carragher has previously said he will not criticise others’ decisions to move to the country for financial benefit, but has clarified his position on Henderson given the midfielder’s past comments.

“The money is difficult to turn down hence why virtually no one has, a great servant & player for Liverpool,” Carragher wrote on Twitter when asked about Henderson. “He will get criticism because he got a lot of praise for his stance on LGBT+ in the past.
