Jamie Carragher believes Andre Onana “went over the top” when he slammed Harry Maguire during a pre-season friendly between Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund
Jamie Carragher has doubled down on his criticism of Andre Onana after he accused the Manchester United goalkeeper of targeting “broken” Harry Maguire.
The incident occurred during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund, where Onana was furious after United gifted Sebastien Haller an opportunity. After the ball went out of play, the Cameroon international sprinted towards Maguire and screamed at him.
Maguire did not have a response for Onana and soaked up the berating. Since that, the ex-Leicester centre-back has been stripped of the captaincy at United but was passionately defended by England boss Gareth Southgate following the Three Lions’ 3-1 win over Scotland, which saw Maguire score own-goal.
Earlier this week, Carragher admitted he felt for Maguire in his Telegraph column and believed Onana hammered the ex-United skipper to endear himself to the United fans. Barney Ronay of the Guardian, meanwhile, shared a different view and doesn’t think Onana is to blame for the incident.
