Jair Bolsonaro has refused to admit defeat in his first statement since being narrowly beaten in the Brazilian elections by left-wing rival Luiz Inácio Lula.
Speaking for the first time since his electoral defeat on Sunday night, he also refused to condemn the widespread protests in his support, saying it was a result of frustration in the electoral process.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gained 50.9 percent and Jair Bolsonaro at 49.1 percent, with some two million votes separating the two.
Bolsonaro welcomed “peaceful demonstrations”, but called on his supporters to not “adopt the methods of the left”.
