A restaurant in Sicily that charged diners €20 to slice a birthday cake has become the latest Italian eatery to face the wrath of cash-strapped tourists this summer.
After splashing out €124 on pizza at the unnamed restaurant in Palermo, a group of customers felt justified in asking a waiter to slice the cake they had brought with them to celebrate a birthday.
Shocked to find a €20 top-up charge on the bill – €1 for every slice – the customers posted the receipt on social media, stoking a row about rip-off restaurants in Italy padding bills with ridiculous charges.
