Crowds of busy shoppers in tourist hotspot caught up in explosion as Turkish president vows to punish suspects
An explosion rocked Istanbul’s best-known shopping street on Sunday, killing at least six and injuring 81 in what the Turkish leadership suspects was a terrorist attack carried out by a woman.
The blast rang out on Istiklal Avenue on Sunday afternoon when the main pedestrian thoroughfare is typically packed with crowds.
A video from the scene showed shoppers scream and run away following a loud thud.
Ali Yerlikaya, the governor of Istanbul, said that the explosion took place after 4pm local time (1pm GMT), killing at least six people and injuring 81 more.
