Israel Adesanya confirms he will get UFC title rematch against Alex Pereira

Israel Adesanya lost his UFC middleweight title to Alex Pereira and the UFC have told him he will get an immediate rematch against the Brazilian for his next fight

Israel Adesanya has confirmed the UFC has told him he will get an immediate rematch against Alex Pereira following his recent loss.

Adesanya, 33, was looking to make the sixth defence of his middleweight title against former kickboxing rival Pereira at UFC 281 in New York this past weekend but lost his belt after being stopped in the fifth round. ‘The Last Stylebender’ was up on the scorecards heading into the final round and just had to reach the bell to get a decision win, but Pereira knocked him out with three minutes remaining in the fight.

It marked the Nigerian-born Kiwi’s third loss to Pereira, having been beaten by him twice before in their kickboxing days. Adesanya revealed the UFC has already confirmed he will face Pereira in an immediate title rematch, telling The MMA Hour of his next fight: “Yeah, me and him. It will be for the belt, it’s gonna be me and him. I’ll talk to Dana [White, UFC president] at some point but Mick [Maynard, UFC vice-president of talent relations], he’s cool, Mick already knows what’s next.”

Pereira’s win over Adesanya came after just four fights in the UFC as the Brazilian only signed with the promotion last year. ‘Poatan’ admitted he was overcome with emotion after his last-gasp win and said he would be open to another fight with Adesanya for his first title defence. “It doesn’t matter to me, the UFC can choose whoever they want me to fight and if they think a rematch is the fight they are going to do then I will be ready,” he said.
