Some of the country’s top boarding schools have experienced a significant growth in student applications, with many parents favouring “less screen time” for their children and avoiding “long commutes”.
Alexandra College in south Dublin provides five-day and seven-day boarding options for students, which cost up to €21,349 a year for domestic applicants. A total of 176 students enrolled as boarders at the school last year, compared with just 67 students ten years ago – an increase of 163 per cent.
Barbara Ennis, principal at Alexandra College, said there had been a “significant hike” in boarding applications when the school opened its new accommodation building in 2016, particularly from overseas students, who are charged a slightly higher annual fee of €25,874.
