The match between the Republic of Ireland and Colombia, held at Brisbane’s Meakin Park, was called off after 20 minutes
The Republic of Ireland were forced to abandon their behind-closed-doors friendly against Colombia on Friday after 20 minutes as a player was taken to the hospital.
Vera Pauw’s side faced the South Americans in a final tune-up ahead of the Women’s World Cup, but the intensity of Friday’s contest became dangerous, with Colombia handed two yellow cards inside 19 minutes before a nasty challenge on midfielder Denise O’Sullivan forced the match to be called off.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder, who was less than a week away from experiencing a maiden major tournament finals with her country, is set to undergo a scan after sustaining a shin injury at Brisbane’s Meakin Park.
A statement from the Football Association of Ireland said: “The behind-closed-doors game between the Ireland women’s national team and Colombia on Friday evening was ended after 20 minutes of play.
