Iranian who fled home now living in fear in UK after racist attack outside flat

Majid Rahamni, 45, left Iran due to fears for his life amid religious unrest before being racially abused and assaulted outside his flat in Gateshead, Tyneside – and is now scared to go out

A migrant who fled his homeland to start a new life in the UK was targeted by a racist attacker. Majid Rahamni left Iran due to fears religious tensions could put his life at risk – but was assaulted outside the block of flats where he now lives in Gateshead, Tyneside.

The 45-year-old is now petrified every time he goes out that someone is going to attack him again. Police are still hunting for the culprit – who Majid did not know – and are understood to be treating it as a hate crime.

He left his home on May 26 to walk to a local shop to buy bread but as he returned he was suddenly confronted by a stranger who hurled abuse and assaulted him. Majid was left bleeding and went into his flat to call for help. After an hour he went out into the street and flagged down a passing police car.

He told the ChronicleLive: “This attack is imprinted in my mind. I always live in fear. I escaped from Iran with many difficulties and came to Europe, but unfortunately, I am not safe here either.”
