Group of women on death row were commemorating the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death which sparked anti-government protests
Iranian forces allegedly beat up female prisoners on Saturday after they burnt their clothes to commemorate the anniversary of a young woman’s death in police custody.
Smoke was seen pouring out of Tehran’s notorious Qarchak prison on Saturday as family members gathered outside the gates, anxious for information.
IranWire, an activist outlet, said detainees were barred from leaving their cells and dozens of gunshots were heard.
According to Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, a group of women on death row had caused the fire by burning their clothes and beds to protest against the prison’s management. Qarchak is notorious for being overcrowded and in poor condition.
