Inside Meg Ryan’s infamously painful interview with Michael Parkinson

Sir Michael Parkinson had his fair share of memorable interviews during his time as a BBC talk show host – but none of them have quite gone down in infamy as much as his chat with Meg Ryan. The 2003 interview has been noted as one of the stand-out moments of Parkinson’s career – with both he and Ryan having to discuss it in the 20 years since. Parkinson, whose death aged 88 was announced today, had expressed his regret in how the interview went, telling Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain he wished he could go back and ‘get it right’. Though in the immediate aftermath neither Ryan nor Parkinson had much nice to say about the exchange, with Ryan later saying he felt like a ‘disapproving dad’ with his interview technique. The You’ve Got Mail star made an appearance on his show at the time to promote her latest thriller The Cut – but it seemed both her and Parkinson were on a knife edge with a series of one word answers and awkward interactions.
