When Dorothy Clarke bought her flat in August 2018, it was the beginning of a new chapter after the death of her husband. She paid £244,950 to the Methodist Homes housing association (MHA) for a two-bedroom apartment in the Fairthorn retirement development in Sheffield.
She planned to leave her home to her children, David Clarke and Gillian Nixon, never imagining that it would end up costing them tens of thousands of pounds in onerous service charges and other fees that many families do not realise come with retirement properties. Dorothy died in 2020 aged 88, and the flat was valued at £260,000 and put up for sale. However, there have been no offers, despite the asking price being reduced to £199,000.
