Proof, if proof were needed, that English football is seriously big business came at the end of last week. Many fans would have been glued to sports channels or hitting refresh on a slew of football websites not because there were vital games to watch but because Friday was “deadline day”, the last opportunity for clubs to sign new players. Over the course of this summer’s transfer window, Premier League clubs again broke the record for the total amount of money spent: in aggregate, the sum amounted to a little over £2.3 billion. It’s worth remembering that this is merely to secure a player’s registration. Players’ salaries come on top of this.
