"I KNOW our leaders like to pontificate on the world stage and get involved in all sorts of external events, but if I were governing the UK I'd focus mainly on running essential services well. Healthcare, policing, education and energy are the four main pillars of any modern society — and all four are a mess in the UK. There's no excuse for this, all that is needed is competent management. Then there is the lack of support for industry. The Government and its Competition and Markets Authority, which should be working to rebuild our economy, are increasingly hostile to business. With its ridiculous North Sea windfall tax and continuing high energy costs, the Government is actively driving investment out of this country. When I see what's going on, I feel nothing but disappointment. Skills aren't what they were. Energy is too expensive. Unions have become aggressive. It's a crisis that needs action but this lacklustre Government seems uninterested.
