Everyone loves a bargain, and no one more so than the middle classes, so news that Waitrose is to join the ranks of other supermarkets in introducing a lunchtime meal deal has been met with a buzz of excitement in offices across the country. Workers will be able to assert their basic human right to have a posh prawn sandwich, packet of crisps and fizzy drink, all bundled up for a special price.
Waitrose says the food-to-go offer, which will include a main, side and drink for £5, will meet growing demand as workers return to the office after the pandemic and because people are travelling more. Or more honestly, I’d have thought, it will meet a growing demand to stop their loyal customer base
