‘I was told my pain was in my head and I was anorexic

Eva Casey, who moved from Ireland to Australia, was turned away from one hospital after another with doctors ‘believing her chronic pain was in her head’ before cancer found

A woman has told how she had chronic pain and lost 16 kilos in 10 weeks but was told it was in her head before it was found she had cancer.

Eva Casey was turned away from a succession of hospitals who claimed that the pain she had beneath her rib cage was in her head. The 36-year-old was even told by one doctor that she may have an eating disorder.

The Irish dental assistant, who has been living in Australia, was given strong opioid painkillers before finally being diagnosed with gastric cancer. She has gone from enjoying Crossfit to being in extreme pain and lacking energy.

She said how she knew it was bad news after having a PET scan and and a few areas had lit up, while further investigations showed the cancer was restricting flow from the stomach to the small intestine.
