‘I thought my dad died when I was a child

Just before her 36th birthday, Tiffany Gardner discovered that her biological dad’s death was a complete lie – he was actually alive and well. The truth that later unfolded changed her life forever…

Tiffany Gardner grew up believing that her biological father had died of cancer when she was a little girl – it was a fact she never questioned and her mother stood by the story.

She was brought up by her biological mum and adoptive step-dad, and didn’t need matching DNA to love him or consider him ‘dad’ – but there was always a nagging thought in the back of her mind.

Tiffany longed to know what personality traits she shared with her deceased parent and wondered what their relationship would’ve been like if he was alive and present. Then, after three decades of believing that he was dead, Tiffany discovered it was all a lie – and her biological dad wasn’t the man she had been told he was.

In 2018, Tiffany learnt that she was actually conceived through the use of an anonymous sperm donor, and the father figure who passed away wasn’t him. “My mother kept the secret as a promise to her first husband, who died of complications of cancer when I was four years old,” Tiffany told the Mirror.
