Ananya Bashyam’s life was saved by her brother, after he donated his bone marrow to help her beat blood cancer. In a strange twist to the heartwarming story, it means she now has two sets of DNA – both hers and her brothers
A Texas woman could take sibling rivalry to a level never before seen – by framing her brother for murder if she wanted.
Ananya Bashyam, 24, had her life saved by her brother Chaitanya, 21, who transfused his cells into hers when she was diagnosed with blood cancer. It means that Ananya has two sets of DNA, making her a âchimera’.
She was diagnosed in October 2021 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia going through vision loss and fever. “I just froze,” she said. “Part of me knew my life would never be the same after that, but I was determined to fight my way through it.”
After six weeks of vigorous chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Ananya was in remission by the end of the year – but this only lasted until March 2022 when she relapsed. The doctors informed Ananya that a bone marrow transplant would be her last option.
