‘I can’t switch lights on without climbing over clutter

A man claimed he hadn’t cleaned or tidied his home in 10 years, and it became so bad he couldn’t even get to his light switches so had to use a pole to turn them on and off

Keeping your home tidy is a priority for most. That feeling after conquering a mess, with everything in order can feel blissful. But for some, keeping tidy isn’t always a priority, and 65% of Brits claim cleaning the kitchen is the worst job of all.

One man hated cleaning and tidying so much, he hadn’t done it in over 10 years. Fifty-three-year-old Jim, from Gravesend, Kent, had collected and amassed thousands of items over the years and had no intention of ever tidying his home.

In fact, the collecting became so extreme, he couldn’t even reach his light switches and turned them on and off with a long pole, instead of climbing over the mounds of items he’d collected for 25 years. Picking up collectables from car boots, charity shops and off the streets, Jim had over 3,000 items of women’s clothing, 250 pairs of shoes as well as 100s of wigs and hats and has never once cleaned up.

Appearing on the show Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners back in 2018, Jim sought the help of Gemma, a cleaning fanatic, who was horrified at the state of Jim’s home. Having to take a moment outside, cleaning guru Gemma was shocked at the way Jim lived, but on the flip-side, he thought Gemma’s house looked too much ‘like a show room’.
