I apologised to Boris Johnson over leadership ‘knifing’, says Michael Gove

Levelling Up Secretary confirms he said sorry to former prime minister ‘a long time ago’

Michael Gove has revealed he apologised “a long time ago” to Boris Johnson over their fallout during the 2016 Tory leadership contest.

Mr Johnson ended up quitting the race to succeed David Cameron in the wake of the Brexit vote after Mr Gove withdrew support to launch his own ultimately unsuccessful campaign.

The two were pivotal figures in the Vote Leave campaign, addressing rallies together and defying Mr Cameron by supporting Britain’s exit from the European Union.

However, Mr Gove revealed he was running for the top job himself just hours before Mr Johnson was set to launch his campaign and went on to publicly criticise his rival.
