Huge beach ‘crater’ from ‘cosmic event’ turns out to be a hole dug by some lads

A strange ‘cosmic event’ discovered on a Dublin beach was reported by Virgin Media News – Ireland’s national independent television news service – only for it to be revealed, by social media users, that the mysterious finding was in fact just a hole dug by some lads. The news report opened by stating the finding on Portmarnock Beach was a “huge mysterious crater that looks out of this world”.  The news team had even gone to the lengths of interviewing an astronomy expert to help explain how the hole appeared.  Local resident Dave Kennedy enthusiastically tried to talk about the findings of the “cosmic event” which came from “up above”. Holding up a rock he thought was from space, he said: “It is weighty, I’m not sure of its composition, but we are going to have to definitely find out.” Virgin News Media were certain the findings were a “cosmic event” (Image: Virgin News Media) The report then showed passers-by inspecting the hole, who were apparently “hoping what they are witnessing is the aftermath of a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event”. But unfortunately for everybody, the hole was the result of a man-made event, with a group of mates digging it during a beach day. After the report aired and people began to view the news item, a social media user uploaded a video that appeared to reveal the truth with the caption “lads, I’m in bits!”. The user continued: “The way your man was talking about the rock being an asteroid had me in tears.” Sharing a video, the theory of the asteroid was debunked as a group of grown men were seen digging out the hole on the beach. lads I’m in bits. One user wrote: “The crater on the sand did not look like an actual crater anyway. Virgin fell for it.” User @AlexandreDsch wrote: “This is just pure entertainment.” Twitter enthusiast, @themoderndevil, wrote: “If I was an astrophysicist enthusiast and got that so wrong, I would climb into the hole and wait for the tide to come in.” Defending the cosmic expert, one Twitter user added: “I love Dave and will fight for his honour, and the right to dream.”
