For millions of us the pressure to squeeze in a regular jog or gym session around the demands of work, parenting and a social life can feel suffocating. It’s hardly surprising that ways to get in shape fast, or through as little effort as possible, are among the most searched for fitness topics online. Researchers in Japan and the US are even attempting to develop drugs that can package some of the benefits of exercise into a single tablet – although thus far they have been trialled only in mice.
