How to get fit and stick with it

Peloton star Ben Alldis shares his ‘forever exercise’ tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle

The alarm goes off at 6.45am and I throw myself out of bed and into my swimming costume. I don’t give myself any time for coffee, or introspection. If I get to the pool for 7.30am, I can manage 30 lengths before my chaotic day starts. So far I’ve followed this regime, three days a week, for more than a month, but summer is the easiest time to form a new habit. How will I manage in winter?

The idea of getting fit is very appealing, but for many like me it’s a slog. Fitness is like weight loss: easy to be motivated for the first few days/weeks, but how do you carry on without getting bored?

Luckily I have coach Ben Alldis, 30, as my guide. Ben – and his partner Leanne Hainsby, 35 – are sporting royalty. As the UK’s most popular cycling instructors on the fitness platform Peloton, where they motivate the millions who take their spin and strength classes, their fans include Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Rishi Sunak.

You can’t imagine Ben (6ft 2in, 273k Instagram followers), slumped in front of the telly or failing to get out of bed for a cardio workout. But Ben and Leanne have been through some tough challenges – and exercising has helped them through.
