How the Lionesses can ignite Women’s World Cup campaign with win over Denmark

England’s unconvincing win against Haiti will give manager Sarina Wiegman food for thought ahead of their clash with Denmark in Sydney – where a win will put them on the verge of the last 16

It may be only the second act in the Lionesses World Cup campaign but Friday’s game against Denmark feels pivotal to their Australian adventure.

Training at the home of the Central Coast Mariners in glorious sunshine earlier this week, England could be forgiven forgetting about Saturday’s game against Haiti entirely – both the good and the bad. In this beautiful corner of the country all troubles seem to melt away.

But Sarina Wiegman’s side performance against the Concacaf outfit did bring about more questions than answers. This leaves England’s Dutch supremo with big decisions to make. Does she unleash Lauren James from the start? Does the back four need a tweak? Will Alessia Russo keep her place up front?

That said they got the task at hand done. A 1-0 win meant three points were collected and no serious injuries were picked up, but it wasn’t the vintage England we have seen under the Dutch coach.
