Premier League matches will be more than three minutes longer on average than last season due to a new approach on time-keeping, according to modelling by officials.
The average length of time for a match in the new season has been estimated as 101min 49sec, up from 98min 26sec last season.
Referees have been told to calculate the exact time taken for goal celebrations, substitutions, injuries, penalties, red cards and VAR checks. In the past, officials used to simply add on 30 seconds for each goal or substitution and only nominal amounts for spot-kicks and red cards.
Analysis has shown that the average time for a goal celebration in the Premier League is 65 seconds.
