Honda e:Ny1 review: A crazy name for an ordinary car

Honda finally gets its act together in the most popular EV market, but can this crazily named battery SUV take on Tesla?

It’s been four years since Honda unveiled the Honda e; the car it didn’t want to build, and which was priced so high and had such a short range, that – though owners love them – not many have been sold. ”

If the e was the start of things, it’s been a measure of the innate conservatism of Honda that only now is it trying to tempt us into the larger, longer-legged electric vehicle, about the same size as its compact hybrid SUV, the HR-V.

So welcome to the e:Ny1 (Anyone? Geddit?), a family, five-door SUV, at 4.41m long – just under 6cm longer than the hybrid engined HR-V. It’s built in Wuhan, China, in a 50:50 joint venture with Chinese car maker, Dongfeng. In fact, the e:Ny1 has already been on sale in China for the last year, badged as the Honda Dongfeng e:NS1.

Both cars are built on the Honda developed e: N Architecture F platform, which is primarily front-wheel drive, although in the launch presentation slides, they accidentally showed a 4×4 version of the car that will probably happen at some point.
