Historic pub rebuilt ‘brick by brick’ after being demolished just like the Crooked House

The owners of the Carlton Tavern in Maida Vale, west London, were ordered to rebuild it after it was demolished without permission. Campaigners want the same for Crooked House pub

Furious residents are calling for ‘Britain’s wonkiest pub’ to be rebuilt’ brick by brick’ after it was demolished following a devastating fire.

The Crooked House in Himley, near Dudley, West Midlands, was reduced to rubble just 36 hours after a blaze swept through the 18th century boozer on August 5. Staffordshire Police said they are treating the fire as arson while the council is investigating whether the demolition of the building – recently bought by a new owner – was illegal.

Calls for it to be rebuilt echoes a campaign launched eight years ago in west London. Crusaders won their battle to have the Carlton Vale pub rebuilt ‘brick by brick’ after it too was demolished with no warning.

The historic pub in Maida Vale, west London, was initially destroyed by a German Zeppelin bomb in 1918 but rebuilt. During World War Two the boozer survived – in fact it was the only building left standing – after a Nazi bombing raid in Maida Vale.
