Help, I need to budget for my first baby

Prior to having your first baby, you will no doubt be aware of the fact that raising a child is expensive – but you might not know the details. You might not realise, for example, that full-time childcare for one child costs about €1,000 a month, or that a large pack of Pampers disposable nappies costs €16.

Most new parents are likely to be aghast at the astronomical costs involved in raising a child – which are rising with the cost of living, of course – but the best approach is to face them head-on. As soon as you find out that you’re pregnant, it’s a good idea to start making lists and budgets, says Michael Laffey of the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (Mabs).
