Heartbroken Lauren James’ dressing room response after England star’s World Cup red card

The Lionesses claimed a place in the Women’s World Cup quarter-finals as they saw off Nigeria in a penalty shootout, but Sarina Wiegman’s side could now be without Chelsea ace Lauren James for the remainder of the tournament

Heartbroken Lauren James apologised to her England teammates following the World Cup red card which could see her miss the rest of the tournament.

The brave Lionesses are through to the World Cup quarter-finals following a nail-biting penalty shoot out win over Nigeria – but after James’ repeat of the infamous France ’98 red card for David Beckham, she now faces not playing again in Australia..

The 21-year-old saw red after she stood on Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie rather than step over her, after a challenge between the pair left both on the floor. Haunting memories of Beckham’s red card against Argentina which cost England the game 25 years ago were echoing in the minds of nervous supporters around Brisbane stadium.

But in a rewrite of football history, the Lionesses clinched victory after Chloe Kelly, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood and Beth England buried their penalties to secure a 4-2 shootout win. They will play either Colombia or Jamaica in Saturday’s quarter final.
