The first game of Manchester United’s USA tour ended in abuse for Harry Maguire, as one fan repeatedly shouted a discriminatory word at the defender after beating Arsenal 2-0
Manchester United continued their 100 per cent record in pre-season with a 2-0 win against Arsenal, but former captain Harry Maguire was verbally abused by fans after the game.
United and Arsenal faced each other at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday night, with both Premier League giants embarking on a tour of the USA. A sell out crowd in East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho score towards the end of the first half, and Arsenal were outclassed as they suffered their first loss of pre-season.
Both teams were heavily changed at the start of the second half, and Maguire came on for Raphael Varane before later picking up a yellow card. Maguire was all smiles as he left the field and interacted with fans, but one supporter decided to use the occasion to abuse the defender.
Maguire was called a ‘m***’ continuously by a fan after the game, but to his credit the England international completely ignored the remark and focused on interacting with other supporters. Maguire left the field and entered the tunnel with no match shirt on, likely giving it away to a fan as a nice gesture.
