Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘s children could soon feel “horribly trapped” in America as they run counter to Uncle Sam’s most cherished ideal, a royal author has warned. After the Sussexes stepped down as working royals in 2020, they relocated to California, wooed by the promise of Hollywood . The move raised profound questions over Prince Harry and Meghan’s role within the monarchy as they forged their own path. The implications of the move extend beyond Harry and Meghan, however. The couple’s children, Prince Archie , 4, and Lilibet , 2, will be raised in an environment that could start to feel alien, Tom Quinn, author of Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family, tells Daily Express US. Trapped: Archie and Lilibet might find themselves clashing with America’s meritocratic ideals (Image: THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF SUSSEX•NETFLIX) As he explained, Americans balk at unearned privilege for it runs against the very idea of the American dream – the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can rise up through merit. A hereditary monarchy is somewhat divorced from this ideal, a lesson Archie and Lilibet may learn the hard way. The royal author explained: “I can imagine Lilibet and Archie are going to get teased at school, possibly bullied, because people say, ‘Oh, you’re a prince and princess.'” He added: “You’re horribly trapped.” Harsh lesson: Lilibet and Archie could get ‘teased or bullied’, warns royal author (Image: Netflix) As Mr Quinn pointed out, there are a few precedents here. A young King Charles had a tough time fitting in at his Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun. “When Charles went to Gordonstoun, at first he thought he would be treated with respect because he was the heir to the throne. In fact, that meant he was bullied far more than the other boys.” And Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son, faced similar blowback when he launched a production company for television and theatre in 1993. Author: The children may struggle for an identity as they grow up (Image: NETFLIX) “People said, ‘Oh, he only got that because he’s a member of the royal family.” Archie and Lilibet may feel this more acutely stateside, however, as “America doesn’t value these things as much as we do here”, Mr Quinn said. He continued: “If you’re born into these things, people might early on say, ‘how marvellous’, but the glitter wears off and then you have got to find what to do with your life. “That’s the question. And it will be a question for Harry too.” Follow our social media accounts here on facebook.com/ExpressUSNews and @expressusnews
