 A store manager who was attacked by shoplifters and is no longer able to work is suing Halfords. Martin Scott, 57 and also known as Marty, was working at the motoring company's branch in Stockton, County Durham, in September 2021 when he tried to stop two shoplifters from ransacking the store. But the pair kicked him in the head and shortly afterwards Martin suffered a stroke, which has left him unable to work as he still suffers from PTSD and confusion. There was CCTV of the attack but the case against the thieves was dropped after police could not identify them. The dad, who has worked for Halfords for 40 years, was offered just £16,000 in compensation by the firm. The company's lawyers reportedly told Martin: 'It is company policy not to attempt to retrieve stock or aggravate the situation and the claimant went directly against this policy, placing himself and potentially others at risk.' Just two months before the attack, the worker wrote to bosses calling for further security support. I have a massive concern. 'I worry that sooner or later a colleague is going to get hurt or a colleague is going to hurt a thief because the abuse and threat is too much.' His family claims Halfords has 'distanced itself' from supporting Martin. Halfords later increased its offer of compensation to £20,000, but Martin rejected this and is now suing the company. His wife Kim, 51, who is an A&E nurse told The Sun: 'It's an appalling way to treat someone. Shoplifting is out of control.
