Half of drivers need financial support to keep cars on the road

Four in ten will have to borrow to afford petrol, research reveals

Half of drivers will need to take on debt or ask family and friends for help to keep their cars on the road this winter, new research has shown.

The annual cost of running a petrol car has risen by £272 since September 2021, largely due to sky-high fuel costs.

Four in ten drivers said they would need to take on debt to keep driving while one in ten said they had already asked family and friends for help, price comparison site Comparethemarket found.

Half of drivers had also cut down how much they use their car while 40pc said they would be forced off the road if costs kept creeping up.
