Gylfi Sigurdsson grabs deadline day move after ex-Everton star’s failed MLS deal

Gylfi Sigurdsson is finally back in football after securing a deadline-day deal with a new club. But the Icelandic midfielder won’t be playing in the MLS  after his reported link-up with Wayne Rooney failed to materialise. The 33-year-old has been in the football wilderness since leaving Everton when his contract expired at the end of the 2021-22 season. He spent five seasons at Goodison Park but did not play a single match during the final year of his contract. But his absence from the game is now over after Sigurdsson agreed to join Danish club Lyngby on a one-year deal. The former Swansea City  star, who has not played a competitive match since Everton lost 5-0 to Manchester City on the final day of the 2020-21 season, says that he is excited to be back playing. I know that there are a lot of young and talented players in the team, and I really want them to learn from me so that we can lift ourselves up together. “I have been very well received by the boys in the squad and they seem fantastic. I sense that it is a very well-balanced squad, and I am very happy to be here.” Sigurdsson’s enthusiasm is shared by Lyngby’s club director Nicas Kjeldsen. He said: “There is no doubt that we are incredibly proud and happy that we can present Gylfi Sigurdsson as a Lyngby player. “Gylfi is a player from a tier that we cannot normally bring players from, which is why it is a testament to our club, environment and great development that we can attract a player of his quality. “Gylfi has not played football in the past few years, which is why we will, of course, be patient with him.” Gylfi Sigurdsson fires home from the spot for Everton against Man City. Reports in June had suggested Sigurdsson was in talks with former teammate Wayne Rooney about joining his Washington DC United outfit in the USA. But when the former Everton striker was pushed by reporters on the prospect of a link-up in the States with his ex-teammate, Rooney dismissed the suggestion, saying: “That’s not on my radar.” Sigurdsson joined Everton in 2017 after completing a £45million move from Swansea. Having also played in the English top flight for Tottenham , he scored 67 goals in 318 Premier League appearances.
