It's been nearly a year since someone managed to hack into Rockstar Games and steal leaked video footage and screenshots from Grand Theft Auto 6, making it one of the biggest hacking incidents the games industry has ever seen. The alleged hacker was swiftly arrested but has recently come back into the spotlight, after his case was heard in court and psychiatrists deemed him unfit to stand trial. As a result, some of the private information obtained has been making the rounds again; namely that GTA 6's budget is more than $2 billion (roughly £1.55 billion), making it more expensive than any Hollywood movie. The claim appears to have resurfaced courtesy of Twitter account GTA 6 News, which shared screengrabs from a message board where the GTA 6 hacker was offering access to data they stole. These messages are from last September and it's there that the hacker claimed that GTA 6 has been in development since 2014, with over $2 billion spent on it so far. Given the source, it's easy to believe this is accurate, but if $2 billion seems excessive for just a single video game, that's probably because it is. Even at the time, there was scepticism surrounding the claim. Instead, it was suggested that the hacker simply misunderstood the data they were looking at. TweakTown's Derek Strickland offers a far more likely breakdown of the budget, with the $2 billion spread across multiple areas such as marketing and GTA 6's purported online mode, dubbed GTA Online 2 by fans.
