Trevor Bottomley was left devastated by the passing of his wife of 64 years, Maureen, so has opted to return to work as a sales consultant
A grieving widower has returned to work aged 85 – after finding life at home “unbearable”.
Trevor Bottomley “hated” living alone after his wife of 64 years, Maureen, passed away in April. And he said his job as a sales consultant has given him a “new life”. Trevor spent more than five decades working in the window industry and after retiring had gone back to his old company, commercial specialists EYG, in a part-time role. He left that position in 2017 when Maureen had a stroke and he looked after her until her death, aged 85.
After she passed Trevor said he struggled to get out of bed. But after a chance meeting with his ex-colleagues he was offered a full-time job. Trevor, from Hull, East Yorks., said: “When Maureen went, the house was so empty. I hated it, basically. I kept myself busy, and I got myself out as much as I could.
“I thought, âI’ll just pop in and see the lads and see how they are,’ and the sales manager offered me a job “I discussed it with my two daughters, and they said âGo for it.’ So I took the job and here I am at 85 years old. It’s my choice to work five days, I feel totally able to do the job. I thought: âThat gets me out every day. That gives me purpose. That gets me up in the morning, instead of staying in bed until 11am,’ which I was doing.
