Grant Shapps says not pressing ahead with North Sea drilling would be ‘irresponsible’

Energy Secretary argues it would be ‘mad’ not to press ahead as failure to do so would force UK to import more energy from abroad

Grant Shapps has said it would be “mad” not to grant new licences for oil and gas drilling in the North Sea.

The Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary argued it would be “irresponsible” not to press ahead with the new sites because a failure to do so would force the UK to import more energy from abroad.

He said this would be much worse for the environment and be far more carbon expensive than domestic production.

Rishi Sunak announced on Monday that the Government was granting hundreds of new oil and gas licences as part of efforts to make the UK more energy independent.
