Terry Pratchett and I were sharing a room at the 1989 World Fantasy Con in Seattle. On Saturday night, Terry was jet-lagged and went off to bed, while I stayed up and closed the bar. Then I went up to the room and sneaked across to my bed when this voice said, 'What time of the night do you call this? Your mother and I have been worried sick.' We lay in our respective beds talking and, by the end of that night, we had basically plotted a sequel to Good Omens. This Good Omens is not that sequel, which is huge and apocalyptic like the first one was huge and apocalyptic. This one is the smaller, not terribly apocalyptic filling to get us from one to the other. They're having to get involved with humanity in a way that they haven't before, in that they're dragged into sorting out the love life of Maggie (Maggie Service), who runs the record shop next door to Aziraphale's bookshop. The relationship between Maggie and Nina (Nina Sosanya), who owns a nearby coffee shop, is one that Crowley and Aziraphale try and fix, but mess up because while they can do miracles, they're no good at human relationships. We also have the marvellous Jon Hamm back as Archangel Gabriel, stark naked, carrying a cardboard box and with no memory of who he is. How did you persuade Don Draper actor Jon Hamm to get naked? Jon is a tremendously good sport. When I came up with the idea, the first thing I did was email Jon and say: 'This is what I'm going to do, are you cool with this? Is that good? Are you OK?'
