Gold winning Paralympian gets freedom of Sedgefield

A wheelchair rugby player has been honoured with the freedom of his hometown in County Durham.

Gold medal Paralympian Jack Smith, from Sedgefield, was surprised with the honour at his old primary school as he told pupils to “follow your dreams”.

He was paralysed playing rugby in Billingham at the age of 16, just weeks after a cancer diagnosis.

Smith admitted he had been “terrible” when introduced to wheelchair rugby but went on to win a gold medal at Tokyo.

“I loved rugby so I went along for my first session and I was terrible – I could barely push my chair the first time I went, so I sat there watching everyone else feeling deflated,” Smith, 31, said.
