Ed Balls sparked uproar on Twitter when he suggested Brexit could be to blame for why so many British holidaymakers are keen to fight over sun loungers. The Good Morning Britain host asked travel expert Rob Staines if the referendum could be the reason security guards are being hired to keep holiday makers in check. Ed asked: “Rob, do you think there is something happening here related to 2016, the Brexit referendum? “Do you think we’re feeling less cooperative towards the Dutch, the Spanish and the Germans? “Is this Britain reasserting itself?” GMB viewers furious as Ed Balls blames Brexit for sun bed towel wars (Image: ITV) “Well, without wanting to wade into politics I’m not sure if Brexit has anything to do with it,” Rob stated. “But I do think you know, as a nation, sometimes it makes me really sad to see scenes of these mass scrums in the morning. “We are known as Brits to be really polite, mild-mannered and very thoughtful about other people and that’s what’s really important here.” ITV viewers were far from impressed with Ed’s suggestion and took to Twitter to brand his argument as pathetic. GMB were reporting live from the Costa del Sol on sun bed wars (Image: ITV) @theMaizeK posted: “Ffs. This sunbed lark is to with Brexit . Ed Balls supposed to be intelligent. #GMB.” @Carla_littlerob added: “F**k sake .. Ed blames the towel wars on # brexit #gmb.” @mostlystupid commented: “It’s not a ‘layered and complex issue’ you prat – people have been doing it since the 70s. “Stop trying to tie it into the recent cost of living crisis and Brexit #gmb.” @FCTIONFEELSGOOD tweeted: “am i really watching a whole segment about people fighting over sunbeds….yeah broadcast journalism is f**ked #GMB.” “What the actual f**k is this drivel this morning! Hardly breaking news #GMB,” @Pr4wnSandwiches shared. GMB correspondent Nick Dixon was like from the Benalmadena as he watched tourists lined up at a gate with their towels before 9am. When they were finally allowed to enter the pool area, many ran to loungers to reserve a prime spot in the sun. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am
