Girl, 8, dies after being swept out to sea as she played with friends

The youngster had been playing in what appeared to be a very safe area of the bay in Fountainstown, Co. Cork, before a huge wave hit and carried the children into the sea

The body of an eight-year old girl has been has been found after she was swept out to sea as she played with friends. Her body was pulled from the water in Fountainstown, Co. Cork following a frantic four-hour search operation.

Shortly before 4:30pm on Tuesday (September 5) the Coast Guard helicopter was launched from nearby Shannon, whilst a number of gardai and ambulances also rushed to the scene as the Coast Guard lifeboat stepped up the search. By 7pm, with a huge crowd gathering in the area, the Irish Naval Service also joined the search.

However, at around 8:10pm it was reported the search had been stood down. The girl’s family have been informed. CorkBeo understands the youngster was playing with three young boys in what appeared to be a very safe part of the bay when a large wave swept the children into the sea.

Earlier in the evening a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently engaged in a search operation along the coastline at Fountainstown Beach, near Crosshaven, Co. Cork, this evening, Tuesday 5th September 2023.
