George Osborne’s wedding overshadowed by poison pen letter on eve of ceremony

Police called in over ‘distressing campaign of harassment’ as email is circulated to guests ahead of big day in upmarket town of Bruton

George Osborne has called in police to investigate a “distressing campaign of harassment” after a poison pen letter was circulated to guests on the eve of his wedding on Saturday.

The former chancellor will marry his one-time adviser Thea Rogers at a church ceremony in Somerset in the face of what his friends have described as a “longstanding” campaign being waged against him.

Mr Osborne, 52, is understood to know the identity of the author of the email that was circulated to guests, friends, and family as well as to prominent journalists. He has begun civil proceedings against the person and has now asked police to investigate.

Friends of Mr Osborne stress that the alleged author  “has no connection” to either the ex-chancellor or his bride-to-be.
