A Cabinet minister has defended Rishi Sunak’s judgment over the appointment of Sir Gavin Williamson as the Prime Minister braces for a potentially bruising PMQs on the subject.
Sir Gavin resigned from the Cabinet last night as he said bullying allegations made against him were “becoming a distraction” from the Government and vowed to clear his name.
The resignation has piled pressure on Mr Sunak to explain why he decided to give Sir Gavin a job at his top table and to what extent he was aware of allegations before he made the appointment.
Sir Keir Starmer is expected to try to capitalise on the situation when he grills Mr Sunak in the House of Commons at noon.
