Greenwood himself has issued a statement in the light of the news. In it, he said "The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club". Richard Arnold, United's CEO, Richard Arnold, wrote an open letter to fans following the decision. In introducing the letter, he said "I want to be direct and transparent with our fans about the process and the reasons for our decision." United, in their statement, reiterated that their action follow an internal investigation. Greenwood had most recently signed a new contract 2021, and that deal had been due to run until the end of the 2024-25 season.
